Over the past couple of years, filming for Epic Trails ha taken me to some incredible places: hiking among the dramatic cliffs of the Faroe Islands, trekking through the wild rainforests of Costa Rica, exploring rugged Scotland with my dad, and backpacking across the open prairies of North Dakota. Whenever I'm on a trip, I'm travelling with guests, a crew, and sometimes a liaison from local organizations. Because of the wild nature of our shoots, almost anything and everything can happen. Delays, dangerous conditions, sudden shifts in weather, and sometimes even getting a little lost are always on the agenda. That's why the production crew at Heliconia and I are covered by Group Travel Insurance (specifically Redpoint Travel Protection)

Adventures Don’t Always Go as Planned

Take the Faroe Islands, for example. The scenery was jaw-dropping, sheer cliffs plunging into the North Atlantic, winding ridgelines, and trails that seemed to disappear into the clouds. But those same stunning landscapes can also be treacherous. High winds, slick rocks, and remote locations mean that a simple misstep could turn into a serious situation.

faroe islands, mike by waterfall

In Costa Rica, the challenge was different. Between rainforest hikes, river crossings, and waterfall rappels, we were constantly surrounded by wild, unpredictable terrain. A slip on wet ground or a sudden illness far from medical facilities can escalate quickly.

costa rica, travel accident insurance

Even in North Dakota, where I was hiking across open prairie, the remoteness surprised me. It doesn’t take a mountain range to feel isolated, when you’re miles from the nearest road with unpredictable weather rolling in, you realize how vulnerable you can be. When I was hiking on sections of the Maah Daah Hey Trail, I noticed that certain times of year the trail may be impassible due to snow, ice, high water and mud.

And in Scotland, while hiking with my dad, I found myself thinking less like an adventurer and more like a family member responsible for someone else’s well-being. If something had gone wrong on those rocky trails or during one of our road trips through the West Highland Way, I needed to know we’d be taken care of.

Why Group Travel Insurance Matters

No matter how prepared you are, travel involves risk. Group Travel Insurance provides financial protection and peace of mind if something goes wrong. It can cover things like:

 • Emergency medical evacuation from remote areas
 • Hospitalization and medical expenses abroad
 • Accidental death or dismemberment benefits
 • Transportation back home for further care
 • Support for family members if needed

For adventurers like me, this isn’t just about being cautious, it’s about being responsible. Whether I’m filming for Epic Trails or exploring off-camera, I want to focus on the experience, not worry about “what ifs.”

Emergency Evacuation Insurance: A Key Layer of Protection

A solid Travel Accident Insurance plan often works hand-in-hand with Emergency Evacuation Insurance. If you’re injured somewhere far from adequate medical care, evacuation coverage is what gets you to the hospital, whether that means helicopter rescue, specialized ground transport, or even a medical flight home. Be sure to look for Emergency Evacuation Insurance if you a looking to purchase Group Travel Insurance to remote areas.

Arkansas hiking offers some of the most breathtaking scenery in the country, especially in the heart of the Ozarks. I explored Jasper and the surrounding wilderness in Arkansas. Arkansas has legendary burgers, mountain trails, thrilling ziplines, and peaceful fly fishing on the White River. The Arkansas Ozarks should be on your hiking bucket list.

Catch all the Arkansa trails from the beginning—read Exploring the Ozarks of Arkansas.

Starting in Jasper, Arkansas: Food and Views

The adventure began in Jasper, a small town with a big personality. At the Ozark Café, I tackled the infamous Excalibur Burger. They take two patties stacked with all the fixings and sandwich them between grilled cheese buns. It was equal parts delicious and overwhelming, the kind of fuel you need before hitting the trails.

Just minutes outside of Jasper lies Round Top Mountain. This easy trail is perfect for families and rewards hikers with panoramic views of the town and the surrounding Ozarks. Not every Arkansas hiking experience has to be extreme—sometimes a short hike with a stunning overlook is exactly what you need.

Horseshoe Canyon Ranch: Climbing, Ziplines, and Adventure

For a more adrenaline-filled outing, Horseshoe Canyon Ranch is the place to be. Known as an outdoor adventure hub in the Ozarks, it offers rock climbing, via ferrata routes, mountain biking, and one of the tallest and fastest ziplines in Arkansas.

The Via Ferrata at Horseshoe Canyon Ranch (a guided climbing route using cables and rungs) was a highlight. Safe yet exhilarating, it’s a great way to experience vertical terrain without needing advanced climbing skills. Crossing suspended bridges and scaling the rock face, I felt the perfect mix of challenge and excitement. The finale—flying through the fall canopy on a zipline—was an unforgettable Arkansas hiking and adventure experience.

Rock Climbing in the Arkansas Ozark Mountains

The North 40 section of Horseshoe Canyon Ranch is home to some of the state’s most iconic climbing routes, with over 500 established climbs. Climbing here felt like solving a puzzle, each move a combination of strength, focus, and balance. For anyone looking to expand their Arkansas hiking trip into new activities, climbing in the Ozarks is both accessible and rewarding.

Fly Fishing on the White River in Arkansas

To balance out the action, I spent a day fly fishing on the White River, one of the premier angling destinations in the U.S. With a patient guide, I learned the rhythm of casting, the thrill of hooking a trout, and the joy of catching a fish that would later be prepared fresh at Gaston’s White River Resort. The calm waters and quiet beauty made this a peaceful counterpoint to the high-energy hiking and climbing of the Ozarks.

Why Arkansas Feels Like a Hiking Playground

What struck me most about this trip is how diverse Arkansas hiking and outdoor activities can be. In one week, I experienced everything from casual family trails to technical climbs, ziplines, and fishing. Locals describe the Ozarks as a playground, and after hiking, climbing, and fishing my way through Jasper and beyond, I couldn’t agree more.

Horseshoe Canyon Ranch, tight rope walking

Arkansas hiking isn’t just about the trails—it’s about the variety of experiences that make every day an adventure. If you’re looking for a destination where you can eat well, hike through stunning scenery, and try something new, the Ozarks are waiting.

Traveling with family is one of the most rewarding ways to explore the world. There’s something special about sharing adventures with the people who’ve helped shape your life. Earlier this year, I had the chance to travel to Scotland with my dad. It was one of those bucket-list trips that I'd imagine just about everyone wants to take. (you should.)

Family Travel Insurance, scotland, the west highland way

We hiked sections of the West Highland Way. We explored castles, navigated winding single-track roads, and soaked in the vast expanse of the Highlands. It was everything we’d hoped for… and a few things we didn’t expect.

Those unexpected moments are exactly why I never travel without family travel insurance. For me, the choice is Redpoint Travel Protection. I’ve learned that good travel insurance isn’t just a safety net—it’s peace of mind.

Traveling with Family Adds New Considerations

When I travel solo, I accept a certain amount of risk. I’ve been caught in storms, missed connections, and dealt with the occasional injury in the backcountry. But when you’re traveling with a parent, or kids, for that matter, things can be a little different because it isn't all about you anymore.

family travel insurance: mike and his dad smiling for camera, scotland

Being miles away from cities and towns further complicates the already complicated process of getting medical attention in a foreign country. Honestly, it's complicated enough in my own country of the USA but I digress.

Having that peace of mind goes a long way in making sure that potential problems and logistics are better covered, which is why travel insurance can be so nice.

Family Travel Insurance for Scotland, Mike Fink hiking the west highland way with his dad

That’s where family travel insurance makes all the difference. With Redpoint Travel Protection, I know that emergency medical evacuation and support are covered, no matter how far off the beaten path we are.

Delays and Cancellations Happen

Anyone who’s traveled internationally knows that getting there is half the adventure—and sometimes, half the headache. Delays happen, flights can be easily missed, and all sorts of shenanigans can result from the snowballing effect of everyday inconveniences.

Family Travel Insurance takes the guesswork out of travel. Having a Scotland pint

Having family travel insurance can help take the sting out of that situation. Redpoint Travel Protection can cover the unexpected costs of rebooking transportation and accommodations. So, instead of stressing over the logistics, you can grab a pint and laugh it off. And believe me, there are quite a few pints to be found in Scotland.

Travel disruptions are a fact of life, but they don’t have to derail your trip—or your budget.

Covering Gear and Personal Items

As a filmmaker and outdoor enthusiast, I travel with a lot of gear. I bring cameras, hiking equipment, and occasionally some specialized backcountry kits. Losing any of that would be more than an inconvenience.

Family travel insurance with gear protection means that if luggage goes missing or equipment gets damaged, I’m not left footing the entire bill. Thankfully, on this Scotland trip, everything arrived as planned. It’s nice knowing that if it hadn’t, Redpoint had my back.

The Real Benefit: Peace of Mind

One of the best parts of traveling with family is being able to relax and focus on the experience. For me, that means taking responsibility for making sure we’re covered if something goes sideways.

costa rica, Family Travel Insurance

With Redpoint Travel Protection, I don’t just get coverage—I get comprehensive family travel insurance support. Their team specializes in adventure travel, so they understand the kind of trips I take. Whether it’s a backcountry hike in the Cairngorms or navigating travel delays in Glasgow, I know help is just a phone call away.

Family Travel Insurance Worth It?

Family adventures are some of the most meaningful trips you’ll ever take. They can bring you closer together, create memories that last a lifetime, and remind you why travel is worth every bit of effort. But they also come with unique responsibilities.

Family travel insurance isn’t just a checkbox on a booking form, it’s an essential part of traveling smart. Whether you’re hiking in Scotland with your dad, road-tripping across the States, or heading overseas with your kids, make sure you’re protected.

Redpoint travel Insurance, Family Travel Insurance, the west highland way

For me, that’s why I trust Redpoint Travel Protection. Because when I’m out there on the trail with family, I want to focus on the journey—not on what might go wrong.

Today we’re talking about sticks. Not the kind you pick up off the ground and toss for your dog, but the kind that can make or break your hike—trekking poles.

I’ll be the first to admit, I’ve been guilty of neglecting trekking poles in the past. But there’s one hike that really changed my perspective: Cape Enniberg in the Faroe Islands. It’s the tallest sea cliff in the world, and when we were filming an episode of Epic Trails there, I quickly realized how much I wished I had brought my trekking poles.

The trail is insanely steep—basically a goat path clinging to the side of a cliff. Going up was tough but manageable. Coming down? That was a whole different story. Every step felt like I was about to bomb straight off the mountain. That experience drove home the value of trekking poles in a way that no gear review or gear shop ever could.

trekking poles

Why Trekking Poles Matter

Trekking poles add stability on tricky terrain, reduce strain on your knees during descents, and help distribute weight more evenly when you’re carrying a heavy pack. They can also make long climbs more efficient by engaging your upper body. And honestly, they can save you from embarrassing (or painful) slips and falls.

But here’s the thing—trekking poles come in a huge range of prices. You can find a set for $20, or you can drop more than $200. So, what’s the difference?

trekking poles

Budget vs. High-End Poles

 • Budget Poles ($20–$50): Usually heavier, sometimes less durable. Great for casual day hikes or if you just want a little extra stability on rocky trails.
 • Mid-Range Poles ($75–$120): The sweet spot for most hikers. You’ll get durability, reliability, and decent weight without breaking the bank.
 • High-End Poles ($150+): Ultralight, compact, and designed for weight-conscious backpackers. If you’re counting every ounce for a thru-hike or multi-day adventure, these might be worth it. Check out these three piece carbon trekking poles by Gossamer Gear.

Just remember—expensive doesn’t always mean better for you. If you’re heading out for a casual afternoon hike, you probably don’t need to spend top dollar. But if you’re hauling a pack for days on end, shaving off weight can make a big difference.

faroe islands

Trekking Poles for Hiking and Backpacking

I’m no trekking pole expert, and I don’t even use them as much as I probably should. But my general rule for outdoor gear applies here: aim for the middle ground. Avoid the cheapest poles that might break right when you need them most, and don’t overspend on ultralight features you won’t really benefit from.

At the end of the day, trekking poles are one of those pieces of gear that you might not think you need—until you’re on a steep, sketchy trail wishing you had them. They can make your hikes safer, easier, and more enjoyable.

So, do you use trekking poles? Did you go budget, mid-range, or all-in on ultralight? I’d love to hear what works for you. Drop a comment, share your experiences, and let me know what gear topics you’d like me to cover next.

Stretching 96 miles from Milngavie to Fort William, The West Highland Way is one of the most famous long distance trails in the world. You'll trek across farmland, along the shores of famous lochs, through dense forests, and into the rugged Scottish Highland.

But what made this journey truly special wasn’t just the scenery—it was getting to share the experience with my dad. When it comes to spending quality one on one time with someone, nothing beats the days worth of chit-chat you get from an extended hiking trip like this one.

Hitting the Trail

Our hike began with the help of Macs Adventure, a company that organizes self-guided hiking trips. They arranged lodging, mapped our route, and even transferred our luggage each day. It allowed us to focus on the trail and enjoy the moments without worrying too much about logistics.

macs adventure west highland way

The first stretch took us past rolling farmland, where sheep grazed among old stone walls. Then came our climb up iconic Conic Hill and our first sweeping view of Loch Lomond. With its sandy beaches and mountain backdrop, Loch Lomond is one of the most beautiful lakes I’ve ever seen.

scenic views on west highland way

We couldn’t resist stopping to soak it all in—the stillness, the wind in the trees, and the sheer scale of the water.

Scotland’s Character

Along the trail, reminders of Scotland’s culture and history were everywhere. There's a level of friendliness and wit that you find on Scotland's people that seem rare in most parts of the world. Almost everyone we met had us laughing.

Food was part of the adventure, too. After a ferry crossing across the loch, we tried haggis for the first time at Drovers Inn. I’ll admit I was nervous, but it turned out to be delicious—rich, hearty, and the perfect post-hike meal when paired with a pint. Nothing at all like I expecting. I ended up ordering it every chance I got. Make sure to get yours paired with neeps and tatties (swedes and mashed potatoes for us uninformed).

Into the Highlands

west highland way macs adventure

Further north, the landscape grew wilder as we entered Glencoe. Here, the mountains rise steeply from the valley floor, streaked with lingering snow even in warm weather. Hiking there felt cinematic—every step pulling us deeper into Scotland’s history and legend.

kingshouse hotel

That night we stayed at the KingsHouse Hotel, a famous stop along the West Highland Way. The highlight was a whisky tasting, where we finally learned the difference between Scotch and the whiskey I’d grown up with. Whiskey is an art form here, and is widely known as the best in the world… for good reason.

The night ended with live Scottish music filling the pub. The music, the food, the whiskey, and the view of incredible Glen Coe made for an unforgettable night.

A Trail That Stays With You

The West Highland Way is more than a long-distance hike. It’s a journey through breathtaking scenery, rich history, and a welcoming culture. For me, it was also about family—slowing down, walking side by side, and sharing experiences we’ll always carry with us.

If you’re searching for an adventure that blends rugged landscapes with unforgettable moments, the West Highland Way belongs at the very top of your list.

Special Thanks

Backpacking internationally can be one of the most rewarding and unforgettable experiences of your life—but it also comes with added layers of risk. Trekking internationally requires planning beyond purchasing travel accident insurance. You're venturing into unfamiliar terrain, often without reliable access to emergency services or even clean drinking water. You combine international travel and wilderness hiking, and suddenly you’ve got some additional safety concerns you might not have considered.

Here are some tips, drawn from my real-life travel experiences in places like Scotland and Costa Rica, on how to stay safe and smart when hiking or backpacking abroad.

Travel Accident Insurance provided by Redpoint Travel Protection, Mike sitting in a
waterfall

Travel Accident Insurance

Accidents happen. Whether it's an injury, illness, or an emergency evacuation, having solid travel accident insurance is essential. When we are filming our TV show, Epic Trails, we use a company called Redpoint Travel Protection, which offers tiered travel accident insurance for different types of travellers, from casual tourists to hardcore adventurers who need high risk travel insurance.

 • Travel Accident Insurance providers can cover medical evacuations, hospital bills, and trip disruptions for backpacking trips overseas.
 • Travel Accident Insurance is a small price for peace of mind, especially if your domestic insurance doesn’t apply overseas.
Travel Accident Insurance for family trips, Mike and his father hiking Scotland, the West Highland Way

Food and Water Safety

Your gut biome is familiar with the food and water at home, and even if the local fare is technically safe, it might not sit well with your system. To stay healthy:

 • Bring a Water Filter: I recommend products like the HydraPak filter bottle or the classic LifeStraw. Read a past article about water filters and purifiers. These allow you to filter both natural water sources and questionable tap water.
 • Carry Emergency Food: Even if you're planning to eat in towns, always pack some dehydrated meals and a small camp stove. Plans change, and local food availability can be unpredictable.

Don’t deny yourself the fun of trying new foods—but you do want to take care of yourself, because nothing’s worse than being sick in the middle of nowhere.

Wilderness First Aid Training

A Wilderness First Aid (WFA) course can be a literal lifesaver. These certifications teach you how to treat injuries, illnesses, and emergencies when you’re far from help.

You’ll learn a lot about keeping yourself and others alive and okay in the wilderness.

Travel Accident Insurance provided by Redpoint, Mike in front of waterfall in Costa Rica

Money and Communication Preparedness

You can’t get food or water—or much else—without money.

 • Carry local currency. Don’t rely solely on your credit or debit card. Machines fail, banks block foreign transactions, and card usage could become unavailable.
 • Plan your phone usage. International roaming charges can pile up fast. Check your carrier’s travel plan options, or consider buying a local SIM card for longer trips.
 • Don’t forget your adapters! Different countries = different outlets. A universal adapter can save your phone—and your trip.

Navigation and Getting Un-Lost

In many countries, trail systems don’t work like the long, well-marked routes we’re used to in North America. You may find fewer signs, more road crossings, or even confusing town-to-town segments.

This can point you in the right direction even if you don’t have service—which is going to be an issue in many, many places.

Travel Accident Insurance makes biking on west highland way Scotland a little safer

Visit a Travel Clinic

Before you head out, visit a travel clinic to get up-to-date on necessary vaccines and medications based on your destination.

 • Info on local disease outbreaks can be found at Travel Clinics.
 • Travel Clinics recommend vaccines like tetanus or flu.
 • Malaria Pills or other prescriptions. They may also prescribe pills to prevent diseases like malaria if you're headed to high-risk areas.
international travel accident insurance provided safety for the Epic trails filming in Costa Rica.

Know the Nearest Hospital

This is one of the most overlooked parts of international travel safety:

 • Research the nearest hospitals or clinics to your trailhead or destination.
 • Save their names, addresses, and phone numbers to your phone and on a physical emergency card in your pack.
 • Give the Info to everyone, If you're traveling with others, make sure they also know where to go in an emergency.
 • Travel accident insurance policies can cover medical expenses so be sure to check the policy before you travel.

Backpacking and Touring Internationally

International backpacking is an incredible way to experience the world—but it’s not without its risks. With a little preparation, travel accident insurance, the right gear, and the right mindset, you can minimize those risks and focus on what really matters: the adventure!

Even though your certification might run out… some lessons stick with you—and I’m extremely grateful for that.

Hi everyone, Mike here with BackpackingTV! Today, we're diving into one of the East Coast’s best-kept secrets: the George Washington and Jefferson National Forest. We’ll cover the best time to visit, what gear to bring, great hiking spots, camping tips, and potential hazards so you can make the most of your adventure.

I would like to give a special thanks to Mossy Oak Properties Land and Farms Realty for sponsoring this blog. Find your favorite place near to George Washington and Jefferson National Forest by visiting their website at landandfarmsrealty.com.

Overview of the George Washington National Forest

Straddling the border between Virginia, West Virginia, and Kentucky, the George Washington and Jefferson National Forest encompass a massive 1.8 million acres of wilderness. Originally separate forests, they were consolidated in 1995 to form one of the largest public land areas in the eastern U.S. The Appalachian Trail cuts through the eastern portion, while the western section offers more secluded backcountry experiences. The forests are divided by the scenic Shenandoah Valley, where you'll find fantastic lodging, dining, and outdoor amenities.

Hikers guide to George Washington National Forest and Jefferson National Forest

Best Time to Visit the National Forest

The spring and fall seasons are the most popular times to visit, thanks to mild temperatures and stunning scenery. Spring brings blooming wildflowers and vibrant greenery, while fall offers breathtaking foliage. Keep in mind that fall is peak tourist season, so expect some crowds. If you have allergies, be prepared for pollen in the spring.

Shenandoah Valley Guide to Hiking: Lake Shenandoah Trail is an easy hike

Summer and winter are less crowded but come with their own challenges. Summers can be hot and humid, so bring moisture-wicking clothing and stay hydrated. Winters can get chilly, so layering is key. The benefit of hiking in winter? Fewer hikers on the trails, allowing for a more peaceful experience.

Hiking and Outdoor Activities

One of the best things about these forests is the variety of outdoor activities available. Whether you’re into hiking, backpacking, fishing, hunting, rock climbing, or paddling, you’ll find something that suits your adventure style.

Top 5 Hiking Trails

1. Devil’s Marbleyard

A challenging yet rewarding boulder scramble that tests your endurance.

2. Humpback Rocks

A short but steep hike leading to incredible views.

3. Crabtree Falls

One of Virginia’s most beautiful waterfall hikes.

4. White Rock Falls

The adventure began with a flight into the heart of West Virginia. As soon as I touched down, I grabbed a rental car and headed towards the quaint town of Wardensville. Nestled in the Appalachian Mountains, Wardensville welcomed me with its rustic charm and warm hospitality. My home for the night was the Firefly Inn, a cozy retreat perfect for unwinding after a day of travel.

Discovering Wardensville

My first morning in Wardensville started with a visit to Farms Work Wonders, a remarkable nonprofit organization focused on sustainable agriculture and youth empowerment. Their work in the community is truly inspiring, and the fresh produce they grow is a testament to their dedication.

For lunch, I stopped by Mack’s Bingo Kitchen, where the mouthwatering local dishes were as delightful as the friendly conversations with the locals. A stroll through the Wardensville Garden Market followed, where I browsed an array of locally made crafts and fresh produce.

Adventures at NRocks and Spruce Knob

The next day, I drove about an hour and fifteen minutes to NRocks, an outdoor adventure haven. My first hike was up Spruce Knob, the highest point in West Virginia. The panoramic views from the top were breathtaking, offering a true sense of the state's wild beauty.

Afterward, I made my way to the Seneca Rocks, a striking natural formation that attracts rock climbers from all over. My adventure for the day concluded with a thrilling climb at Via Ferrata at NRocks Outdoor Adventures, a unique and exhilarating experience that challenged both my physical and mental limits.

Exploring the Cranberry Wilderness

Leaving NRocks, I ventured into the Cranberry Wilderness for an immersive hiking experience. The pristine trails and untouched landscapes were a hiker's paradise. Camping overnight in the wilderness allowed me to reconnect with nature, falling asleep under a canopy of stars.

Overlooks and River Valleys

Waking up to the sounds of nature, I embarked on another hike through the Cranberry Wilderness. The Big Spruce Overlook and Williams River Valley Overlook offered stunning vistas that captured the essence of West Virginia's rugged beauty.

Unveiling the Underground at Lost World Caverns

After a restful night in Lewisburg, I explored the fascinating Lost World Caverns. The intricate formations and underground wonders were a testament to the natural history hidden beneath the surface.

Waterfalls and Farewells

On my final day, I embarked on a waterfall hike, stopping at the Falls of Hill Creek. The cascading waters and serene surroundings provided a perfect conclusion to my West Virginia adventure. As I drove back north towards the airport, I reflected on the incredible experiences and the deep connection I felt with the land.

As I boarded my flight back, I couldn't help but feel a profound appreciation for West Virginia. This journey through the Appalachian Mountains not only allowed me to explore the stunning landscapes but also to reconnect with my roots. The people, the places, and the adventures reminded me of the importance of preserving and cherishing our natural world.

West Virginia, with its charm that makes it Almost Heaven, had once again proven to be an adventurer's paradise. Until next time, keep exploring and embracing the great outdoors!

Take a hike! Get lost! These are phrases I've heard over and over again my whole life. Luckily, I now live in the modern age where getting lost is a thing of the past… Unless my phone battery dies. These days we have access to so many hiking-focused navigational apps that the amount of choices will make your head spin. A popular comparison is AllTrails vs Strava but there are so many apps! The good news is, each of the apps I'm going to discuss today WILL get the job done. Each of these apps offer the ability to download maps and use them offline – far away from the nearest cell phone towers. This is the most important feature! Apart from this, each app has it's own distinct advantages.

AllTrails+: User-Friendly and Feature-Rich

AllTrails+ is the big name in hiking apps, and for good reason. It’s incredibly user-friendly and features a huge active userbase that writes regular reviews, shares photos, and rates trails. With AllTrails+, you can easily search for trails by distance and diffuculty, and on more popular trails, you can find up-to-date info by digging through recent the trail reviews. The app is perfect for those who are looking for well-trodden paths and want to avoid any unexpected surprises.

alltrails vs strava review

One standout feature of AllTrails+ is the Wrong Turn Alert. Imagine this: you’re deep in the woods, maybe chatting with a friend or just lost in your thoughts, and suddenly your phone buzzes. That’s AllTrails+ letting you know you’ve strayed off the trail. It’s like having a hiking buddy who keeps you from wandering too far off course. This is super helpful for new hikers, but might be a pain if you intend to stray off the beaten path.

alltrails va strava - hiking apps

Another great feature is the Live Share button, which lets you share your location in real time with selected contacts. It’s a nice safety net, ensuring someone knows where you are at all times. Whether you’re a casual hiker or a seasoned trekker, AllTrails+ offers a simple, reliable experience that’s hard to beat. Next up, AllTrails vs Strava, how does Strava compare?

Strava: The Athlete’s Companion

Next up is Strava, an app that’s very popular among athletes, particularly cyclists and runners. Strava’s approach to hiking is a bit different from AllTrails+. It’s less about the trails and more about the activity itself. Strava is known for its social media-like features, where you can track your hikes, share your progress, and even compete with friends.

AllTrails vs Strava hiking app comparison

One of the key features of Strava is its Route Builder tool. While not as robust as some might like, it’s great for mapping out a trail in advance, especially if you’re hiking in an urban environment or planning a mixed activity outing. Another feature, Beacon, allows you to share your real-time location with others, similar to AllTrails+’s Live Share.

AllTrails+ vs Strava beacon for hiking

Strava shines when you’re interested in more than just hiking. If you also cycle, run, or engage in other distance-based sports, Strava is a great all-in-one app. Plus, it adds a competitive edge to your adventures—who doesn’t like a bit of friendly (or unfriendly) rivalry?

AllTrails vs Strava club social

OnX Backcountry: The Hardcore Adventurer’s Tool

Finally, we have OnX Backcountry, the app I personally favor. OnX is less about finding pre-made trails and more about creating your own adventure. It’s like having a cartographer in your pocket, ready to help you chart a course through the wild.

onx backcountry, alltrails vs strava

OnX is especially useful when you’re planning multi-day trips or need to navigate complex routes. It offers point-to-point measuring, which helps you figure out distances as the crow flies—a handy tool when you’re exploring less-traveled areas. One of its most impressive features is the ability to customize your offline maps. You can zoom in and out, choose different levels of satellite detail, and download exactly the region you need.

onx outdoors app, alltrails vs strava

For those who hike, bike, ski, or climb, OnX Backcountry offers tailored functionality that makes it easy to view trails and routes specific to your activity. While it may be a bit intimidating at first, once you get the hang of it, OnX Backcountry becomes an indispensable tool for serious adventurers.

Which Hiking App Is Right for You?

AllTrails+ is perfect for the casual hiker who wants a user-friendly app with plenty of trail options and safety features. When comparing AllTrails vs Strava, Strava is ideal for those who enjoy a mix of activities and like to add a social or competitive element to their outings. OnX Backcountry is the go-to for hardcore adventurers who need detailed, customizable maps and the ability to plan complex routes.

onx

Ultimately, the best app for you depends on your hiking style and needs. Have you tried any of these apps? I’d love to hear your thoughts—drop a comment below and let’s keep the conversation going.

Happy trails!

Hiking Clothing: Do You Really Need Expensive Gear? https://Hazeadventure.com/hiking-clothing-do-you-really-need-expensive-gear/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=hiking-clothing-do-you-really-need-expensive-gear https://Hazeadventure.com/hiking-clothing-do-you-really-need-expensive-gear/#respond Wed, 28 Aug 2024 07:05:00 +0000 https://Hazeadventure.com/?p=13836 Today, we're diving into a topic that's been on my mind for a while now: hiking clothing. Specifically, those expensive t-shirts and whether or not they're worth the hype.

The post Hiking Clothing: Do You Really Need Expensive Gear? appeared first on Hazeadventure.

]]>
Let's talk fashion, baby. Everyone knows that certain clothes (i.e. a good jacket) may justify a heftier price tag, but what about the little things? We've all seen the expensive tees and shorts at REI and wondered – “why is this $70? Is any shirt worth $70?”

Let's find out. Also, the answer is no.

Do You Really Need Expensive T-Shirts?

I've always had difficulty finding affordable hiking clothes that actually fit. They either fit me well across the shoulders and hang loose like a poncho around my waist, or they fit my waist and my upper body feels like it has been swallowed by a boa constrictor. It's for this reason that I own a pricy shirt or two. Or five.

I've found that pricier brands tend to fit, as well as hold up to the wear and tear that I put them through. However, none of this is exactly relevant when it comes to being in the woods. Who cares what you look like, all that matters out there is how you feel.

So – how do you feel? Good? Good! Then whatever you are wearing is perfect. That's really the long and short of it.

hiking clothing, expensive vs cheap

So, Where Should You Spend Your Money?

If you’re going to splurge, pants are where you should consider investing. When it comes to pants, there’s a world of difference between hiking in high-quality, trail-ready pants versus blue jeans. Nobody likes chaffing, and good trail pants will stand up to years of abuse, especially if you are willing to repair them as you go.

hiking clothing cotopaxi jacket

But the real game-changer? Jackets. A good jacket can make or break your hike. Yes, they’re expensive, but they can be worth every penny. A solid jacket keeps you warm, shields you from the wind, and packs down easily.

I used to be on Team Cheap Jackets, but recently discovered just how nice a solid jacket can be. Admittedly, this was pretty easy for me, as some of the big brands sent me their finest jackets to try, and I got to keep them. Yeah, they may feel more comfortable if I don't have to spend anything on them.

To sum it all up, I say spend less, save more, and be comfortable. Though, you may want at least be willing to spend on something that will actually increase your quality of life! Check out another Hazeadventure article about hiking clothes.
