Ontario’s Petawawa River is recognized as one of the top multi-day canoe trips in eastern North America. While canoes are a great way to navigate the river, we opted for a different approach.  We swapped the canoes for fishing kayaks, and we brought a raft with a center-mounted oar rig that could be rowed by a single person, while hauling an extraordinary amount of gear.  We chose to bring the fishing kayaks versus canoes, because the Petawawa River is not just a world class backcountry trip, but a world class musky fishery.

I’m not going to spoil the story before you get to watch the video.  What I can tell you is that the trip lived up to our high expectations.  The Petawawa is truly a world class backcountry river trip, and something that any experienced backcountry paddler should put on their bucket list.

Bottom line is that Ontario and Québec have a ton of other great places to paddle, which has kept me from returning to the 1000 Islands sooner.  But I hope that doesn’t diminish how incredible the 1000 Islands are for paddling.  They truly are a paddling paradise, and unlike anything else that I’ve found around the world.

I think the coolest thing about the area, is that it blends a stunning coastal wilderness environment, with outdoor lifestyles, as many of the 1000 Islands are inhabited.  On top of that, there’s a lot of boat traffic in the area too – from sea doo’s and zodiacs to sailboats and yachts, you’ll find it all in the 1000 Islands. The truth of the matter is that they’re there for the same reason I was – to enjoy one of the coolest wilderness/urban coastal environments in the world.

Joining me on my tour of the islands was Scott Ewart of 1000 Islands Kayaking Company. Based out of Gananoque, Scott and his team are responsible for putting a huge number of butts in boats every year.  Whether you’re a first-time paddler, or an experienced paddler looking for the right route, these are the guys you want to connect with if you take a paddling trip to the Thousand Islands.

I wanted to do some real paddling, and see more than just the highlight section. So, I launched my kayak at Smart’s Marina on the southern end of Mazinaw Lake, and explored the lower lake. I wasn’t disappointed.

The lower lake is beautiful, and it was cool to see the great Mazinaw Rock loom larger as I moved northward. To make a long story short, Mazinaw Rock really was amazing to see up close and I can understand why people flock here throughout the summer.

My bigger revelation was about the park itself. I had always mistakenly believed that the Bon Echo was a small park on the banks of Mazinaw Lake. I didn’t realize how far the park extended to the west of Hwy 41. Once again, I found myself stroking one destination of the bucket list, while I added another. The countryside is beautiful in this area, and so next time I drive through the park, I’ll be reminding myself that I need to get deeper into the western side of the park.
